'I sat on my kitchen floor and cried': Overwhelmed single mother breaks down in gratitude when an anonymous neighbor leaves homemade meals and kind notes at her doorstep, after a week of dealing with sick children alone

I often think that there should genuinely be a trophy awarded to single parents.

Instead of a 'trophy wife,' we'd call them 'trophy parents.' Parents who deserve recognition for raising a child alone, because there's no doubt that it has its array of challenges…

From having to be in five places at once, to never having a moment to themselves…especially in a child's early years. I had a single mom, and she is truly super woman. While working a full-time job, she still always managed to give me whatever it was I needed, whether it be advice, a home-cooked meal, or a simple goodnight kiss. She is proof that one person really can do it all, but that doesn't mean it's effortless or that they should have to. Sometimes, even single parents need help too, more than they're willing to let on.

  • This single mother was brought to tears with gratitude. Quite literally. After a long and hard week of dealing with her sick children and sick self, she was feeling utterly drained. Surviving on “crackers and spite.” So was feeling helpless and sorry for herself…until she arrived home to something unfamiliar on her doorstep! There it was, a container of homemade soup, breads, and even a little note “from Apt 4B.” 

    She didn't even know who lived there, but what she did know was that this was the kindest thing a ‘stranger’ had ever done for her! Whether her anonymous neighbor had seen her struggling or not, she seemed to know exactly what this mother needed. It wasn't simply about the soup or the bread, it was about what it represented: kindness, support, and community. Because ‘single’ doesn't have to mean ‘alone.’

  • This just emphasizes how important it is to be kind to others, as you may never know just how much they need it. We're not even asking for grand gestures, even a smile to someone passing by can be enough to make their day. So talk to strangers, laugh with strangers, help them cross the street, or make them an extra bowl of soup. Then maybe, just maybe, the world won't seem so strange after all. 

  • Ceilidh_ That's utterly gorgeous OP, and so are you. What a beautiful heart you have. The days where our kids need us that way go by so fast. You've got a neighbor who recognized what you're going through and cared enough to want to do something to lighten your load. That's a beautiful thing. Probably they were in shoes not too different from your own at some point. I'd wager it's someone whose own children are grown and flown, who doesn't mind the familiar sounds of kids being kids, even if the
